Which SF&F Markets Publish the Most New Authors?

I've wondered it. You've wondered it. Or not. But now's your chance to wonder in case you haven't. Which SF&F markets publish the most new authors? (Hat tip to Cat Rambo, who also explains Why You're Always Being Rejected by Fantasy Magazine.) Here's her breakdown of the percent of fresh blood for each market:

F&SF: 3%
Analog: 5%
Asimov's: 20%
Baen's Universe: 21%
Intergalactic Medicine Show: 32%
Interzone: 40%
Realms of Fantasy: 51%
Clarkesworld: 61%
Strange Horizons: 68%
Weird Tales: 72%
Chizine: 78%
Fantasy Magazine: 88%

So if you've never published anything before and your query to F&SF keeps getting SASEd back to you, now you might have an inkling why.

* * *

Finally, I want to add a plug for SmokeLong Quarterly, even though it's not sf&f, and even though I have no idea what percentage of new writers they publish, because (a) it's the bees knees, and (b) fellow blogger Davin Malasarn helps edit it. Check out his blog for an interesting essay of the value of online publication.

If you know of any other publications deserving a plug, let me know and I'll be glad to add them.

Tara, Thanks so much for the plug. I actually can't say how many new writers are in SmokeLong because, quite honestly, I don't even pay attention to who the writers are. Submissions are anonymous to the editors--we can check if we need to, but we hardly ever do--so I usually remember the stories and not the writers. We DO interview, though. I know two of the writers because I volunteered to interview them based on how much I liked their stories.

The publication stats are interesting. It's always great to get actual numbers instead of just spreading rumors. The book Novel & Short Story Writer's Market also has a symbol for each magazine that describes how many new writers they take.

Please don't post things like this. I'm trying to resist the short story bug, and you're making it difficult. ;)

I'm kidding, of course. Well, about most of it.

Thanks for sharing. I'm going to link to this and spread the word!
Hey, thanks for the info! Yes, I'm trying to resist sending short stories out. Good thing I only work on WIP at a time. ;)

I don't write SF&F, but that's a great list for those who do!

Wow! Thanks for the info. I'm currently writing a scifi that I hope to be finished by the end of summer and you can better believe I'll be referencing your post for this info! haha.

I've been writing a SF&F book for years and don't finish it because I end up wanting MONEY right away so I stop and sell a short magazine article or something.

I have never published a magazine SF story tho . . . (only special interest stories). Maybe I should give writing a short SF a try. (You inspire me . . . thanks)
What a great list. It is interesting to see who is really open to first timers.

I just warn everyone: there is no real money to be made in selling sf stories! (Sad, sad, sad but true.)

There may be no money in sf stories, but if it's your genre you live with it, lol.

I have bookmarked this page. Only three other sites have received that honor: Gmail, Pandora, and Weather.com.
