WiP: A Trailer and a Teaser from Sworn (The Unfinished Song Book 10)
I found a scene I could share that has a few teasers for the final trilogy in The Unfinished Song, without giving away too much. I couldn't share what Dindi and Kavio are up to, but this is a related storyline about Finnadro and Rthan...
***
The hard-pressed journey consumed the days that followed. They had experience working together from their quest with Kavio the previous year, but they had to adjust to having only two pairs of hands for all the tasks of a war party. They established a good rhythm. Finnadro deferred to Rthan in any matter regarding the water or the canoe, and Rthan let Finnadro choose their passage through the woods. Rthan fished and Finnadro hunted. At night, over the fire, they each roasted their catch, then shared both meats.
Without Kavio’s insight to smooth over small misunderstandings or Tamio’s jovial humor to lighten the mood, their conversation was often stilted. Entire evenings went by without them exchanging anything other than a few words. The closer they came to Red Spears territory, the more the stress and the longer the silences.
Then one morning, Rthan woke up before dawn because he heard a child crying. Rthan leaped to his feet and ran to the river. There, standing chest-deep in the water, a little girl was weeping.
Rthan froze. The little girl was his daughter... Meira... but she was only eight years old.
Footsteps squelched in the mud. Finnadro had his bow in hand, ready to notch an arrow, but he looked wildly over the river in bewilderment.
“What is it? Where’s the danger?” Finnadro whispered.
The little girl wailed piteously, as if someone were ripping out her heart. She looked exactly like Meira, but Meira as she had once been, years ago. She was surrounded by a nimbus of sadness: deep, deep Blue, almost more like shadow than light. The undulating indigo and the keening wail wrenched Rthan’s innards.
“You can’t see her?” Rthan asked hoarsely.
Finnadro shot him a sharp look. “Fae?”
“The Blue Lady,” Rthan said. “I once served her, but I’ve broken that bond. I don’t know why she’s here.”
“You could ask her,” suggested Finnadro.
Rthan didn’t want to speak to the Blue Lady. He didn’t want to see her wearing his daughter’s younger face, he didn’t want to hear her crying as if someone was murdering her. But he stepped into the water until he came to his knees. Finnadro stayed on the shore.
“What do you want with us, Blue Lady?” Rthan called out. “Why do you come to me? I am no longer your Henchman.”
“He’s hurting me, Daddy,” the child Meira wailed. “He’s hurting me... He’s going to give all of us up to fire and shadow... He is stealing all the Blue children, he is warping them, he is twisting them and burning them! Ayaha, it hurts! He is turning Blue willawisps into Hisswisps and Blue sylphs into Boilwraiths... and he plans to unleash the Typhoon Eel from the Kiln of Fire!”
“Who?” cried Rthan. “Who is doing this?”
“Only my Red sister thinks she can defeat him, because he needs her, but the rest of us will perish, and all our magic with us...O, I beg you, help me, save me!”
