Glad it "made your day." I really like the premise you set up. Now where is the full length novel starting the trilogy? :)
Seriously, please (if you haven't already), take the time to write down the 'rules' of you 'painted world.' Different ways to capture an individual and perhaps 'advantages' to the 'painted person.' e.g., how much memory does the 'painted army' have of prior battles and what in their 'painting technique' granted them extra skills (or handicaps).
I see you having something that could last a la 'Mythadventures' (but less light) or perhaps more.
But spending a couple of night's setting up the ground rules, ideally with some heavy drinking, would pay off for years for you and your readers.
I promise to buy your first novel in the Painted world series.
